Cinemalaya 2009

Cinemalaya 2009 independent film festival will be held starting this Friday, July 17 – 26, 2009 at Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). There will be ten films that will compete in full length and short film category.
You can check the schedule of screening of the full length movies thru this link. Single ticket price per movie screening is only Php 100. Students will have 50% off on all the movie package screening including the single ticket movie screening. I will try to work out my schedule so I can watch the films of Cinemalaya 2009. I prefer to watch indie films these days as the commercial pinoy movies are so predictable and have low quality in terms of story. Indie films present various social issues which which help the public to be enlighten.
“Kinatay” Movie Director Won Best Director of Cannes 2009 Film Festival

Another honor for the Philippines as the recently concluded Cannes Festival 2009 Best Director was awarded to Filipino director Mr. Brillante Mendoza for the movie “Kinatay”. This is the first time in history that a Filipino won the Best Director for Cannes Festival for the full length movie category.
The movie “Kinatay” (means butchered) is about criminology student named “Peping” who want earn a huge money so he can marry his girlfriend “Cecile”. He was offered a big sum of money by “Abyong” to do a special project which turn out killing a woman and tearing her into pieces. The film was written by Mr. Armando Lao

Indie Film: Rome and Juliet
Synopsis
ROME AND JULIET follows the romantic journey and soul mating of two straight women caught in a web of forbidden love.
Juliet (a conservative pre-school teacher) is a bride to be who befriends and hires Rome (a liberated businesswoman) as her wedding planner. As they go through the preparations, Rome and Juliet develop a deep friendship, a soulful connection and a love that is physically consummated. But conflicts arise when Marc, the groom who is a young politician, shockingly discovers the ongoing relationship between the two women.
Angered and humiliated, Marc calls off the wedding and a huge scandal explodes, leaving Rome and Juliet in a state of emotional turmoil. Not long after, Juliet is driven away from home by her mother, gets fired from work and later becomes a victim of a road mishap that puts her in a coma. But in the end, despite all the trials and hurdles Rome and Juliet’s unconventional love for each other remains strong and intense.
